Expandable furniture
Synonymous with modular furniture. Since they consist of individual modules, they can be expanded at any time by adding new modules. This can relate to size or functionality. Being modular, this office furniture can also be downsized or just modified.
Open storage
Open storage refers to items of furniture for storage that are not closed at the front, but open. The sides and back walls can be open or closed. The contents of the furniture are at least always visible from the front.
Closed storage
Closed storage refers to pieces of furniture that are also closed at the front. It can be doors, flaps or drawers.
Dresser
The chest of drawers is the oldest so-called box furniture. It always consists of drawers, but they can vary significantly in number and size. The German word was borrowed from French (commode = convenient ”).
Lowboard
The lowboard is always low. Usually between 25 and 50cm high, it is mainly used as a TV or media board. Its compartments tend to offer less storage space, but the surface creates a lot of space for decoration. It uses the width and with the appropriate length it can visually stretch rooms.
Sideboard
A sideboard is generally 70-100cm high. It evolved from the chest of drawers, but differs in function. Instead of drawers, the sideboard is often only equipped with doors and shelves. As a sideboard in the dining room, it also has drawers for cutlery. Sideboards are now also placed in living rooms or other areas, as they perfectly combine the functions of storage and decoration.
Highboard
A classic highboard is 110-130cm higher than a sideboard. As a rule, the highboard is less wide than it is high and combines open and closed storage options. If a highboard is very high and wide, the traditional term wall unit is more likely to be used.
Wall unit
A living wall is a large, multi-part combination, which consists either of individual elements screwed together or also in so-called endless construction of individual sides and floors.
Shelf
A shelf is simple, open storage. There are basically two types: the wall shelf, which consists only of a shelf attached to the wall, and more complex, free-standing shelves. Shelves are always open to the front and can also have side and rear walls. Modular furniture systems offer the possibility to equip a shelf partially with closed compartments or drawers, so the lightness and transparency of a shelf is retained, but at the same time storage space is created for less representative things.
Room divider
A room divider is a piece of furniture, a curtain or similar, with which a room is divided or screened into different areas. Depending on the desired effect, room dividers can be high or low, allow or prevent visibility.
Showcase
A showcase is a piece of furniture in which something is displayed. The showcase is provided with a pane of glass at least on the front. It can also be provided with glass on all sides.
Side table
A side table is a small table that can be used for various purposes. It is often found next to a sofa as a storage space. It is usually smaller and taller than a saloon table.
Saloon table
The salon or coffee table is placed in front of a sofa. It is usually very low.
ergonomics
The term ergonomics comes from the Greek (Ergon = work, Nomos = rule / science). Ergonomics means designing and adapting working conditions and requirements to the needs and abilities of the working person.
Ergonomic working
Computer work often means sitting bent forward at a desk, which can lead to tension and chronic back problems. It is ideal to alternate between sitting and standing regularly, preferably every 2 hours. This can be optimally achieved with a height-adjustable desk. The following breakdown is ideal: 60% sit dynamically, 30% work standing and 10% deliberate walking. Every office worker should sit at an ergonomic workstation.
Desk
A desk is a piece of furniture for writing and office work
teacher’s desk
A desk is a table-like frame with a slanted top for reading or writing. Teacher’s desks in classrooms have been called desks since the 1950s until today, although in many cases the characteristic incline is no longer there.
Desk with adjustable height
Describes a desk with a writing surface that can be adjusted in height. A distinction is made between manual and electric height-adjustable desks .
Manually height adjustable desk
The height of the table top is changed either by pressing the table top with force or by using a crank. That can be exhausting and time-consuming.
Electrically height adjustable desk, electric desk
The height is adjusted electrically at the push of a button. Electrically height-adjustable desks are much more comfortable than manual ones, as the regular change of working posture can be implemented effortlessly. A distinction is made between electric desks with and without memory function.
Control panel
Every electric desk has either a control panel with an up or down button or a display with a height indicator and memory function.
Memory function
The control panel of electric desks with memory function displays the height of the desk and has memory buttons. This memory function makes it possible to set the exact correct working height for different options or people with the simple press of a button.
Soft start / stop function
This function guarantees a smooth, jolt-free height adjustment so that no objects can fall off the desk.
Anti-collision protection
This function helps to avoid damage or even injuries. In the event of a collision, the movement is stopped immediately and the desk moves back again. This function protects against, for example, that your desk is damaged by objects underneath it or that it is itself damaged in the process.
Height adjustable feet
Height-adjustable feet allow for fine adjustments to compensate for minor unevenness in the floor.
Anti-fingerprint
The anti-fingerprint effect means that a fingerprint on the surface is not perceived, or only very weakly, with the naked eye.
Veneer, real wood veneer
Thin layers of wood, which are separated from the trunk by various sawing and cutting processes, are called veneer. Veneered surfaces are real wood surfaces that, like solid wood, have different grains depending on the tree. Artificial imitations, on the other hand, are often labeled with a “wood look”.
Melamine coating
Melamine is a synthetic resin. Due to its properties, it is an ideal material for coating furniture. Melamine surfaces are easy to care for, robust, as well as water and grease resistant.
